Former Fritz Benedict cabin up for historic designation

An early Scandinavian immigrant’s cabin that was originally built near today’s Owl Creek Road in Snowmass in the 1880s, and is now a restored structure on Neale Avenue in Aspen, could become a historic landmark.
In between the cabin’s journey from the site of what is now the Timbers Club to the hill above Heron Park, it came under the care of influential Aspen architect Fritz Benedict, who rescued the then-deteriorating structure in the 1970s, moved it to his Stillwater Road property east of Aspen and had it restored.
“In the early 1970s, Fritz and Fabi Benedict decided that the cabin was architecturally and historically too valuable to just let go to waste or be turned into firewood like so many other beautiful and historic cabins of the valley, and it was clearly in the path of future development where it was,” the cabin’s current owner, Jeffrey Shoaf, wrote in a letter to the city’s Historic Preservation Commission. Shoaf met with the commission Wednesday to discuss the cabin’s potential worthiness as a historic landmark.
